How to Apply for a Grant from the Ernst & Ether Eriksen Trust

Graduate students can apply for a bursary to do a Masters or Doctorate post graduate degree at an approved South African university.

Application Process

  • Applications open on 1 August and close on 30 September.
  • Applications are for a study grant for the following academic year.
  • All bursaries are granted for one year only. Applicants must reapply for each successive year.
  • All applications must be submitted online. Posted applications will not be considered.
  • Once submitted, the application is checked to ensure all required information has been provided. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • The applications are submitted to the Board of Trustees of the Ernst and Ethel Eriksen Trust.
  • Applicants are informed of the status of their application towards the end of December.
  • The amount awarded will not exceed R20 000 for the proposed year of study.
  • Payment of study grants for those successful applicants is made directly to the university where the applicant has indicated he/she will be studying.

Follow These Steps

Guidelines

  1. Make sure that any documents that are required have been prepared before you start. Documents should preferably be in pdf format.
  2. The following documents are required:
    1. A certified copy of your identify document (required in step 1)
    2. A certified copy of the results obtained in your most recent year at university (required in step 2)
    3. A letter of confirmation that you have been accepted for your field of study and proof of application to the relevant university (required in step 2)
      NOTE: If you have applied, but not yet been confirmed you only need to provide proof of application to the relevant university.
    4. Two references from academics (required in step 5). You are responsible for obtaining the references and attaching them to this application. The reference must by completed on the Eriksen Trust Reference form. Please note we are not able to contact referees directly.
  3. The application form requires you to specify what your anticipated income will be, your estimated expenditure and the total amount you are applying for.
  4. In step 4 you are required to submit 3 essays which must be entered online and be a maximum of 1000 characters each:
    • We would like to know more about you:
      1. Tell us about family, including your current circumstances.
      2. Share a little about yourself:
      3. Describe yourself in three words
      4. How would your friends describe you?
      5. What is your greatest passion?
      6. What are your major strengths/weaknesses
    • Give a short overview of your school (and post Matric/tertiary achievements so far.
      1. What Leadership positions have you served in and what impact has that had
      2. Mention the committees/organisations you belonged to and any community service projects you have been involved with.
      3. Briefly state why you have chosen your field of study
    • Discuss your further study plans and ideals for the future.
    • Describe the South Africa you want to see in the next 10 years
  5. Once you have everything ready, you will need to register online in order to access the online application form.
